Thank you to all the teachers who helped us hone the new GCSE resources for Thackray Medical Museum.
The new specifications for History GCSE prompted Thackray Medical Museum to review its offer. Innovate Educate Ltd carried out consultation with teachers to find out how the museum could best meet their needs.
We are acutely aware that schools will only be able to devote one term to topics related to the history of medicine. Teachers were very clear that they did not want copious notes and wordy documents; they want resources to help them deliver the unit precisely, making best use of time and so reducing stress levels for teachers and, importantly, students. This means a visit to Thackray Medical Museum provides a clear focus on what is essential and important.
As a result we produced three separate resources for three different exam specifications (AQA, OCR and Edexcel) to make sure teachers and students get the most out of their visit. The resources are tailored specifically to each exam board with a particular focus on the content of each syllabus, relevant terminology, particularly the terminology used in exams, and exam technique.
To make the best use of time on a visit, the web site contains suggested routes through the museum, presented as interactive trails, with information and images that can be used back in the classroom. There’s also a timeline which will help students to understand the key themes, the catalysts for change and the pace of change in the history of medicine.

We’d love to hear from teachers who are using the resources and are keen to add any great ideas they might have.
